New Jersey Governor Phil Murphy has signed a bill to raise penalties for catalytic converter theft, a measure supported by the National Automatic Merchandising Association, according the NAMA weekly legislative roundup.

New Jersey experienced a 152% increase in thefts since 2021, including some that have affected the convenience services industry. NAMA will continue advocating for similar legislation in other states.

Lawmakers in California, Connecticut, Georgia and Delaware have introduced similar legislation.

NAMA has joined a coalition of trade groups to support a federal law to combat catalytic converter theft.
