New York City residents can now put used Nespresso capsules in a blue bin and have Sims Municipal Recycling gather and separate the used materials for recycling, thanks to $1.2 million from Nespresso, according to a waste360.com report.
The investment allows Sims to send the metal to a shredder, open the capsules and release the coffee. An eddy current ejects the shredded aluminum. A magnet removes ferrous metals, and the eddy current separates nonmetallic from metallic materials and separates aluminum from other nonferrous metals. The coffee is then sent to a landfill.
Previously, the coffee capsules were not getting recovered.
Nespresso customers can also bring used capsules to UPS drop-off locations, Nespresso boutiques and select retailers.
