Bandai Namco, coin-op, crane machineJAPAN -- Bandai Namco has teamed up with snack manufacturer Calbee Inc. to produce a cola-flavored snack chip. According to press reports, bags of the new limited-edition chips will only be available as prizes in the game manufacturer's skill cranes in Japan. By playing one of the skill cranes, players will have the opportunity to win either a single bag chips or a small bucket containing two bags.

How do they taste? According to a video released by Namco, the soda-flavored chips are a hit with consumers who are surprised by their taste. A national taste test is planned for later in the month, along with promotional contests on social media.

The move toward exclusive distribution of "products through skill cranes" represents a new approach to attracting players. Rather than employing high-dollar-value products or long-established licensed merchandise, skill cranes featuring the chips are relying on a different kind of exclusivity and perceived value.

How well this strategy will work remains to be seen. The cranes have not yet begun featuring the chips.
