NAMA calorie-disclosure compliance guideCHICAGO -- The National Automatic Merchandising Association's May 24 webinar on the U.S. Food and Drug Administration's calorie-disclosure rules for vending machines registered some 300 calls, representing upwards of 450 total participants. In related news, NAMA has published a how-to manual to help vending operators prepare for the Dec. 1 compliance deadline.

"We developed this webinar given the industry's need for specific information on calorie disclosure," said NAMA senior vice-president of government affairs Eric Dell. "It's a significant issue for the industry that has been the focus of our work for the past five years."

The webinar addressed the history of the rule, along with its application to specific products, rule enforcement and vending operator requirements. It also covered NAMA's ongoing advocacy efforts, which include grassroots activities like the upcoming Fly-In in Washington in July and the publication of guidelines.

NAMA's new guideline, titled "A Comprehensive Manual on Compliance," provides answers to 40 frequently asked questions regarding vending machines and compliance with the caloric-content rules issued by the FDA. It costs $99 for NAMA members and $199 for nonmembers. The purchase, which includes a copy of the webinar presentation, will be digitally updated if the final rule is amended in any way.
