The Moses Lake City Council has voted to prohibit the distribution of all drugs, including Narcan, on city property, according to a Source One report. The decision follows community debate surrounding a Narcan vending machine installed at the Moses Lake Public Library in November 2024 by Thriving Together NCW.
The vending machine, which the organization reports has reversed 12 opioid overdoses and dispensed 583 boxes of Narcan, became a source of contention. According to the news outlet, councilman Victor Lombardi criticized its placement, stating it was done "apparently without our knowledge" and did not represent community views. Council members David Skaug and Mark Fancher supported Lombardi, arguing for the machine's relocation. Councilman Don Myers questioned the efficacy of removal, and Deputy Mayor Judy Madewell expressed concerns about the machine deterring families from the library.
Following an executive session, the council unanimously adopted a policy prohibiting all drug distribution on city property, including Narcan. City Attorney Katherine Kenison was tasked with exploring alternative solutions with the library. A timeline for the vending machine's removal is expected at a later date.
