According to a posting on the website Rooster Teeth, where Oum currently worked, the cause of death was a severe allergic reaction during a simple medical procedure that left him in a coma 10 days previous to his death.
Well known for his video combat sequences, Oum left Bandai Namco in 2009 to join Rooster Teeth Productions where he created the animated Web series Red vs. Blue and RWBY (pronounced Ruby). His specialty was the relatively new online genre machinima -- a combination of the words "machine" and "cinema" -- that recycles or borrows characters and visual elements of videogames to create cinema-like stories.
Oum described himself as "Cambodian, Vietnamese, Chinese and Japanese."
He is survived by his wife, Sheena; father, Mony; and brothers, Woody, Sey, Chivy and Neat; and two sisters, Thea and Theary.
"As for honoring Monty, we will do that in our own way," Rooster Teeth posted. "In lieu of flowers or gifts, we ask that you simply do something creative. Use your imagination to make the world a better place in any way that you can."
