A vending machine at Commonwealth Brewing Co. in Fairfax, Virginia, is offering miniature art prints instead of snacks as part of a local initiative to support artists and small businesses, according to a Northern Virginia Magazine report.
The Mini Art Vending Machine, created by Fairfax City Economic Development, benefits the City of Fairfax Parks and Recreation Department. For $1, visitors can purchase one of nine original miniature prints designed by local artist Ash Smith, an Alexandria resident and George Mason University alum.
"What I love about this project is that it brings together two things we care deeply about — supporting local artists and strengthening our small business community," Tara Borwey, assistant director for programs and retail strategy with Fairfax City Economic Development, told the magazine. "By placing the vending machine in local shops and gathering places, we're helping to drive foot traffic, spark curiosity and encourage people to explore all that Fairfax City has to offer."
The machine debuted October 16 during the City of Fairfax Fall Festival and will remain at Commonwealth Brewing through November 9 before moving to Fairfax High School for the Holiday Craft Show on November 15 and 16.
The ongoing project will feature eight to ten artists on rotation, with each collection displayed for four to six weeks. Submissions for winter- or holiday-themed designs are open through November 6, with selected artists receiving a $150 stipend.
