Webster Kindergarten Center in Escanaba, Michigan, has installed a book vending machine to encourage reading, according to a Daily Press report. The machine, an Inchy's Bookworm vending machine, was purchased through a community effort involving donations from local service groups, a Donors Choose project and the Dr. David Dewar Pay it Forward Foundation.
"We are grateful for the generosity of our community, whose financial support makes it possible for us to bring meaningful projects to life in our schools," Krista Johnson, principal at Webster, told the news outlet.
Students will receive special Inchy coins for academic achievements, kindness, positive behavior and good attendance, which they can then use to select a book to keep. The initiative aims to reward positive behavior and provide books for students to build their home libraries. Other local schools are now considering similar book vending machines.
