The Prasarana Malaysia Berhad, a government agency that handles urban public transport in Malaysia, has launched reverse vending machines to drive greater recycling.
The machines are located at high traffic transit locations, according to a Packaging Insights report.
The vending machines dole out rewards for recycling plastic bottles and aluminum cans.
"This approach not only simplifies the recycling process, but also encourages positive behavioral change through the use of smart technology and reward systems. It also supports Prasarana's efforts to build a more sustainable public transport ecosystem," Idzqandar Abu Bakar, chief health, safety, security, environment and sustainable development officer at Prasarana Group, told the news outlet.
The machines use data-tracking to monitor user engagement levels and amount of recyclable materials collected.
