The government of Malaysia continues to expand its People's Income Initiative vending machines to include businesses, hospitals and universities, according to a Malaymail.com report.
Economy Minister Rafizi Ramli said an IPR vending machine will be installed at Universiti Teknologi Mara on March 21 when students return to the campus.
The ministry also plans to expand the vending machine program to 5,000 beneficiaries under its Food Entrepreneur Initiative this year. Under the initiative, the beneficiary will receive a machine at a selected location and receive a monthly rental of between RM600 ($133.72) and RM800 ($178.29) depending on the type of machine. The operators will have to spend RM20,000 ($4,467.33) to RM30,000 ($6,685.99) for each machine.
One recipient, Syuhaila Mohd Yusof, said she was able to sell bread, pastries, nasi lemak and fried chicken for RM1 (22 cents) to RM3 (67 cents) each.
