LONG BEACH, CA -- The Long Beach city council passed on Aug. 18 a resolution that establishes nutritional guidelines for snacks and drinks sold in vending machines on city property.
It requires 100% of snacks and beverages at sites that serve youth to meet USDA-specified nutrition standards. It also requires city-contracted vending machines to have at least half of their snacks and all of their beverages meet the same health guidelines.
The council has asked city staff to consider expanding the policy to regulate products containing trans and saturated fats.
