On Tuesday, Kraft Heinz announced its commitment to remove all food, drug and cosmetic artificial dyes from its U.S. products by the end of 2027. The company also stated it will not introduce any domestic products containing these synthetic colors, according to a CNBC report.
The decision affects approximately 10% of the company's U.S. portfolio, including well-known brands like Kool-Aid, Jell-O, Crystal Light, MiO and Jet-Puffed marshmallows. This move follows broader regulatory pressure from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration and the Department of Health and Human Services, which have advocated for the food industry to eliminate petroleum-based synthetic dyes. In April, the FDA announced its own plan to phase out several dyes, including Red No. 40 and Yellow No. 5, by the end of 2026.
"The vast majority of our products use natural or no colors, and we've been on a journey to reduce our use of FD&C colors across the remainder of our portfolio," Pedro Navio, North America president at Kraft Heinz, told the news outlet.
This is not the company's first step in this direction; in 2016, it removed artificial colors, preservatives and flavors from its popular macaroni and cheese.
