Oxender said in an April 15 update on Keurig Green Mountain's website that three out of the four K-Cup types available for the Keurig 2.0 hot system brewer are recyclable, and an increasing number of the capsules will transition to a recyclable format each year between now and 2020.
"That said, we don't want to simply make our packaging recyclable, we also want to ensure that our new K-Cup pod design can be effectively recycled in the majority of community programs," Oxender stressed.
To that end, Keurig has been working on a three-part, holistic approach to reducing product waste. Its focus is on product design, including selecting capsule materials; recycling infrastructure, ranging from household access to recycling, to recyclers' ability to sort material; and end-market development, Oxender said.
