Kentucky convention centers deploy smart-vending program

Visitors to Kentucky's convention sites may access high-end local snacks and interactive technology following the launch of a "smart" vending program at the Kentucky Exposition Center and the Kentucky International Convention Center.

Kentucky Venues announced the deployment of Envision IQ machines, a line of American-assembled vending units designed to offer more than just standard snacks. Developed in partnership with Louisville-based Pap's Jerky, the machines feature family sized products and a curated selection of Kentucky-made goods.

The initiative aims to provide food and beverage options during pre- and post-event hours when traditional concession stands are often closed.

"These machines enhance how we serve guests while strengthening Kentucky Venues' commitment to innovation," David S. Beck, president and CEO of Kentucky Venues, said in a company press release. "They give visitors access to high-quality local products, create new opportunities for partners and sponsors, and provide valuable data insights."

High-tech features

The units are equipped with 49-inch interactive touchscreens that offer a multilingual interface to accommodate international travelers. To ensure accessibility, the purchasing controls are located on the lower portion of the screen.

Beyond dispensing snacks, the machines serve as a digital communication network. Event organizers can use the screens to:

• Promote daily programming and schedules.
• Broadcast emergency alerts and venue messaging.
• Display branded content for sponsors.

Data-driven operations

The program also introduces a new level of analytics for the venues. Built-in sensors track foot-traffic patterns, "dwell time" (how long a person stays at the machine), and purchasing trends. Officials say this data will help event planners better understand attendee behavior during the ongoing transformation of the convention campuses.

Local flavor

The initial product lineup focuses heavily on regional brands. Current offerings include Kentucky Venues Snack Mix, Pap's Jerky, Kizito Cookies and items from Bourbon Barrel Foods. Unlike traditional machines, these units are designed with "multi-spiral" capacity, allowing them to vend larger items and combo packs suited for families and exhibitors.
