To fight a rise in opioid overdoses, Kaiser Permanente in San Rafael, California has launched a free Narcan vending machine at its San Rafael Medical Park, according to a KRON San Fransisco report. The lifesaving nasal spray reverses opioid overdoses.
"We have seen an alarming number of fentanyl-related deaths, and six out of 10 overdose deaths are fentanyl-related," Jason Bateman, emergency medicine physician at Kaiser Permanente San Rafael, told the news outlet. "Since having the machine for three-and-a-half days, we have had to restock the machine twice."
Kaiser Permanente partnered with OD Free Marin to place and maintain the machine. They plan to explore installing more machines based on usage.
