Art Studio Wao, an event management company in Sasebo, Japan, has installed a vending machine that sells deep fried insects, including grasshoppers, cicadas, diving beetles, silkworm chrysalises and crickets, at a roadside market in Hirado, according to a report in The Mainichi.

The insects are bottled and refrigerated, and sell for 600 to 1,000 yen (about $5 to $9).

The company, which now has three such machines, plans to install nationwide.

The company's online store took second prize in a local business plan contest for a plan to revitalize the region using edible insects.
