ISTANBUL -- Commuters in Istanbul can add credit to their subway cards by depositing their empty cans and bottles in reverse vending machines at the station, The New York Times reported.
Once a value has been assigned to a deposited plastic bottle or can, the machine crushes, shreds and sorts the material. To further encourage recycling, the machines will track the number of bottles recycled by each passenger and reward those recycling the largest number of containers with tickets to free or discounted events.
The initial reverse vending machines are installed at the I.T.U.-Ayazaga Station. Plans call for installing at least 100 more at 25 locations across the city, including at schools and universities, by the end of the year.
