University College Cork has become the first Irish campus to install a reverse vending machine as part of its ongoing efforts to reduce plastic waste, according to 96FM report. The machine, installed in partnership with Tomra, allows students to recycle plastic bottles and cans in exchange for tokens, which can be donated to support refugee students.

"In another step forward on our Green Journey, we are delighted to have one of the first reverse vending machines operational at an Irish university," Gráinne Thompson, Áras na Mac Léinn events and media manager, told the news outlet.

The machine is operational at the Áras na Mac Léinn Student Centre.
