The global intelligent vending machine market is projected to grow from $11.7 billion in 2026 to $28.7 billion by 2033, according to a Persistence Market Research report.

The forecast represents a compound annual growth rate of 13.7%, supported by demand for cashless payments, automated retail and convenient self-service purchasing, according to a press release.

Persistence identified remote monitoring, artificial intelligence and connected inventory systems as technologies helping operators track sales, plan restocking and address equipment problems. Transportation hubs, workplaces, hospitals and schools offer expansion opportunities, including applications selling fresh food, personal care items and electronics accessories beyond traditional snacks and beverages.

High equipment costs, maintenance needs and cybersecurity concerns could limit adoption, the release said. Operators also must account for connectivity disruptions, payment failures and refrigeration problems. The firm expects competition to center on equipment reliability, payment compatibility, energy efficiency and software that helps operators manage costs and product availability.

The next big retail opportunity may not need a checkout counter — or even an employee. Explore the technologies and strategies powering the next generation of unattended retail at the Automated Retail & Kiosk Innovation Show, Dec. 14-16 in Miami Beach.
