The Greenwood Community School Corporation's four elementary schools, in Indiana, have received a donation of book vending machines from local companies Williams Comfort Air and Mr. Plumber, according to a WIBC report.
The gift also includes a free book for every elementary student in the district for the upcoming school year. The initiative aims to promote early literacy and encourage a love of reading by providing students with the experience of choosing a book to take home. The machines have been placed at Isom Elementary, Northeast Elementary, Southwest Elementary and Westwood Elementary.
The companies hope the donation will build on research showing that access to books at home increases reading frequency outside of school. The vending machines are stocked with a variety of age-appropriate books for students to choose from.
"Giving back to our community is a core piece of our company culture, and this initiative falls right in line with our core values," Mike Roszkowski, president of Williams Comfort Air and Mr. Plumber, told the news outlet. "Early literacy is the first step toward unlocking a child's full potential — opening minds, doors and opportunities."
