India sees LPG vending

India is beginning to roll out automated LPG vending machines, often called "LPG ATMs," to make access to cooking gas faster and more convenient, according to a Times of India report.

The self-service machines allow consumers to exchange empty cylinders for filled ones without booking or waiting for delivery. The initiative, led by public-sector oil companies including Bharat Petroleum Corp., comes as the country looks to modernize fuel distribution and address supply challenges linked in part to geopolitical disruptions.

The machines operate through a simple, digital process that typically takes just a few minutes. Users enter their mobile number, verify their identity with a one-time password and place an empty cylinder on a weighing platform. After verification and digital payment, a compartment opens to dispense a filled cylinder. Most systems currently provide smaller, easier-to-handle 10-kilogram cylinders and are designed to offer round-the-clock access while reducing reliance on manual distribution.

Installations remain in the pilot stage, with deployments in Gurugram, parts of Delhi-NCR and select areas in Maharashtra, Gujarat and Karnataka. Officials say the technology is particularly useful in dense urban areas and residential complexes where delivery logistics can be difficult. If expanded nationwide, LPG ATMs could signal a broader shift toward automated, self-service energy distribution, aligning with India's push for digital infrastructure and improved access to essential services.
