The Illinois State Police have charged Paul Breaux, a vice president and general counsel at Carvana, with 27 counts of failure to transfer vehicle titles by a dealership and 50 counts of improper use of registration and titling, according to a jalopnik.com report citing Automotive News as its source.
Illinois has twice suspended Carvana's license to sell cars over failing to provide buyers their titles.
Breaux has been instructed to appear in Illinois circuit court on Nov. 1, and has been held liable as legal representative of Carvana.
The department received more than 100 complaints by customers who claimed Carvana, an e-commerce platform for buying used cars that delivers cars to customers with a massive, coin-operated vending machine, failed to transfer their titles.
Breaux responded that the state has charged him because Carvana delivered a car to a customer's home. He said he met with several state officials in 2017 to describe this practice and they did not raise any concerns, during which time tens of thousands of cars were delivered to Illinois homes.
