A hydrogen-cartridge powered vending machine has been installed at the Osaka Kansai Expo, opening March 18, 2025, according to a report by The Asahi Shimbun. Developed by Coca-Cola Bottlers Japan Inc. and Fuji Electric Co., the machine generates electricity through a chemical reaction between hydrogen and oxygen, producing zero carbon emissions and using approximately half the electricity of a standard vending machine.

The machine utilizes replaceable hydrogen cartridges, allowing for installation in locations without direct electrical connections. While the technology demonstrates a potential for off-grid power solutions, Coca-Cola Bottlers Japan has not yet committed to broad commercial deployment due to current cost and space considerations, as well as the need for expanded hydrogen infrastructure. The expo will feature a total of 252 vending machines, anticipating high demand during the summer months with expected peak sales of 1,000 bottles per machine per day.
