KANSAS CITY, MO -- Hostess Brands Inc. said chief executive Bill Toler will retire effective Mar. 1 or sooner if a replacement can be found. He is widely viewed as the driving force behind the Twinkie maker's success.

Toler will stay on the company's board. Dean Metropoulos, executive chairman of the board, will assume additional duties while the company searches for Toler's successor.

Toler joined Hostess after Apollo Global Management and C. Dean Metropoulos bought it out of bankruptcy in 2013. He was appointed chief executive in 2014 and led the company's return to the stock market last year.

In August, the company reported $52.4 million in year-to-date income, which was up $18.2 million over the comparable prior-year period.
