Game nerds are applauding the discovery of a hidden menu in the original arcade version of Midway Games' Mortal Kombat. Interestingly, the menu causing a stir is the type of standard operator controls regularly included in coin-op videogames of the MK era.
A video detailing the hidden menu in classic 1992 game is in wide circulation. Initially uncovered by the Cutting Room Floor website in October, the video provides step-by-step instructions for accessing secret control screens that include basic diagnostic functions, as well as the ability to edit the high-score names list.
The hoopla surrounding the previously forgotten operator controls is part of a renewed interest in classic videogames. This curiosity has not only fueled the emergence of so-called "barcades" featuring the classics, but also a growing fan base eager for any history and trivia about the games.
