Snacking remains important to consumers, as the majority (71%) snack at least twice a day, according to the fourth annual Mondelez International Inc. "State of Snacking" report.

The report, which surveyed thousands of consumers across 12 countries, explored how current economic challenges are affecting consumer snacking choices around the world — with a majority of respondents continuing to prioritize snacking despite rising costs and economic challenges, according to a press release on the report.

Highlights include:

  • 78% of consumers reported they take time to savor indulgent snacks, while 61% said they take time to portion out snacks before eating them.
  • Consumers are increasingly replacing meals with snacks, with 55% reporting a higher likelihood to eat a snack across all three standard mealtimes.
  • Reducing waste is a top priority, with seven in 10 consumers saying they prioritize snacks that have less packaging and 72% saying they typically recycle it.
  • 61% of consumers go out of their way to find preferred snacks.
  • 84% said chocolate is good for the soul.
  • 75% always find room in their budget for snacks.
  • 64% would pay more for snacks that are good for the environment.
