The vending machines -- which allow users to purchase items that will be donated to those in need -- reportedly came from more than 52,279 contributions at the five Giving Machine locations.

The Giving Machines are part of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints' month-long Light the World initiative, which encourages members to give service and aid to those in need globally and locally.

Passersby can purchase items ranging in cost from $2 to $200, including livestock, food, educational materials and medical supplies, which will be donated to those in need.

Five Giving Machines are up and running at the church's Manhattan New York Temple site in New York City's Lincoln Square; the Water Tower Plaza in Gilbert, AZ; the Hyde Park Chapel visitors' center in London; and the SM Mega Mall in Manila, Philippines. They will remain in operation through Dec. 31.

During the 2017 Christmas season, Giving Machines reportedly raised more than $550,000 for local and international charities when it debuted in the lobby of the Joseph Smith Memorial Building in Salt Lake City, UT.
