Payments technology company Fiserv has announced two strategic acquisitions aimed at expanding the capabilities of its Clover point-of-sale system and strengthening its presence in the European market. The company has acquired CardFree and completed the acquisition of the remaining stake in AIB Merchant Services (AIBMS).
Financial terms of both transactions were not disclosed.
The acquisition of CardFree, a platform that provides customized ordering, payment and loyalty solutions for merchants, is intended to enhance Fiserv's Clover point-of-sale system. CardFree's patented technology, developed by the team behind the original Starbucks and Dunkin' mobile apps, is compatible with various POS systems and payment processors.
Fiserv plans to integrate CardFree's platform into its Clover and Commerce Hub ecosystems, which is expected to add new features such as drive-through software, kiosk and sub-inventory management, and improved third-party software integration for loyalty programs and delivery services.
"Today's acquisition builds on the strong foundation Clover and CardFree have created through our work together and positions us to further expand Clover's capabilities across the hospitality, restaurant and lodging industries," Takis Georgakopoulos, Fiserv COO, said in the release.
"Integrating CardFree's technology into Clover enhances our platform's scalability and flexibility, empowering hospitality businesses to drive growth through elevated customer experiences."
In a separate move, Fiserv has completed its acquisition of the remaining 49.9% interest in AIBMS, a payment solutions provider in Ireland and a major e-commerce acquirer in Europe. The deal, which was first announced in April, solidifies Fiserv's ownership of the joint venture. Under the terms of the agreement, AIB Group will continue to exclusively recommend Fiserv to businesses for card acquiring services. The acquisition is expected to fuel the growth of the Clover system in Europe.
