Vending and coffee service sales improved in 2021 thanks to the pandemic recovery, but remain below 2019 levels, according to a European Vending Association report.

The increase was driven by a change in the number of machines and in number of vends, price increases and consumption gains, according to a press release on the report.

This year's report covers 24 countries and includes expanded data for the coffee-to-go segment and a focus on the U.K. coffee market.

Highlights include:

  • The total number of machines across Europe has climbed to 4.4 million.
  • The Italian market again counts the largest field base with more than 818,000 machines.
  • Micro markets number almost 5,000 across Europe and are showing impressive year-on-year growth.
  • The German market revenue is €2.5 billion ($2.43 billion), an increase of 5% from 2020 and the largest market by revenue.
  • Growth in Ukraine from 2016 to 2021 was 15% for machine numbers and 20% for revenue, but must be read in context of the ongoing war.
  • Poland posted 7% growth in machines and almost 20% in revenue.
  • The average selling price for a hot beverage rose by 4.7%

The full 176-page study consists of a European report outlining the continent-wide trends and 24 individual national reports containing around 20 pages of data apiece.
