NEW YORK CITY -- The American Society of Composers Authors and Publishers has named Elizabeth Matthews chief executive. She succeeds John LoFrumento, who retired on Dec. 31 after 33 years of service to the performing rights organization, including 17 years as chief executive. Matthews began her tenure at the helm of ASCAP immediately.

Matthews, who has served as executive vice-president and general counsel since 2013, was the unanimous choice of the board's 12 writer and 12 publisher members. ASCAP president and chairman Paul Williams, an award-winning songwriter, lauded the new chief executive's experience in the global multimedia content sector.

In her previous ASCAP post, Matthews was a key internal leader on modernizing the society's licensing systems and pushing for reform of its consent decree. She also spearheaded the organization's support for introducing the Songwriter Equity Act in Congress.

Matthews came to ASCAP after serving as executive vice-president and deputy general counsel at Viacom Media Networks (formerly MTV Networks) since 1998.

Through the Jukebox Licensing Agreement, ASCAP's music repertoire can be accessed for public performances on jukeboxes.
