Dutch plant breeder Rijk Zwaan has developed a vending machine concept designed to encourage young people to eat more fresh vegetables. The machine dispenses boxes containing snacking vegetables such as peppers and cucumbers, paired with a container of hummus for dipping. The concept was demonstrated in early February in Berlin at Fruit Logistica, one of the produce industry's largest trade shows.
The produce is packaged in a bright red box and distributed through a vending machine similar to those commonly used for snacks like chips or candy. Rjik Zwaan said the goal is to make fresh vegetables more accessible and appealing in settings where traditional vending machines dominate.
Jan Doldersum, manager of chain and retail at Rijk Zwaan, told the Fresh Produce Journal the company is focused on addressing barriers to vegetable consumption by creating new eating occasions and reshaping habits. He added that several German retailers have expressed interest in testing the vegetable vending machines in stores.
