Dreyer's Grand Ice Cream has changed the name of its former Eskimo Pie to Edy's Pie, according to a USA Today report. The new name reflects the last name of Dryer's founder, Joseph Edy.
The change was made because "Eskimo" is considered to be a derogatory term for Indigenous individuals in the Arctic.
The company decided in June to rebrand the treat. Dreyer's was among several companies to rename products following the killing of George Floyd in March in Minneapolis.
The treat was patented in 1922 by Russell Stover and Christian Kent, according to Smithsonian Magazine.
