ATLANTA -- Coca-Cola Co. posted net income of $2.32 billion, or 54¢ a share, for the three months ended June 29, up from $1.37 billion, or 32¢ cents a share, a year earlier.

For the three months ended June 29, total revenue fell to $8.93 billion from $9.7 billion a year earlier as the company refranchised bottling operations.

Sales from Coca-Cola's core beverage business rose 5% in the quarter, with Diet Coke, Coke Zero and sparkling water leading the surge.

In North America, sparkling soft drink volume grew 1%, fueled by double-digit growth in Coca-Cola Zero Sugar. Water, enhanced water and sports drinks climbed 5%.

The Atlanta-based beverage giant sold more Coca-Cola Zero Sugar in North America during the second quarter, after changing the beverage's name from Coke Zero to clarify that the drink doesn't contain any sugar. The relaunch of Diet Coke in slimmer packaging and new flavors during the quarter also fueled sales growth.

Volume climbed 2%, driven by strong performance of the trademark Coca-Cola brand, and Fuze Tea. Global volume grew 3%.
