The Denver Post has raised questions about Aramark's prison foodservice as the city council prepares to vote on a contract supported by the Denver County Sheriff's Department.
The article claims inmates in Arapahoe and Jefferson county jails, as well as other prisons across the country, have complained about Aramark's prison food, including allegations of food being rotten, expired and stored at improper temperatures.
Aramark has already won the $9 million proposed contract that begins July 1 and ends June 30, 2023.
Chief Vincent Line of the Denver sheriff's department told city council this month he supports Aramark and said it focuses on culinary excellence. Having worked 19 years at the Arapahoe county sheriff's office, Line said he was not familiar with complaints about the company.
An Aramark representative released the following statement to Vending Times:
"Aramark serves more than 300,000 incarcerated individuals every day — providing them with quality, nutritious meals. Allegations included in inmate lawsuits do not accurately represent the work of our people or the quality of what we provide to those we serve."
