Coronavirus could eliminate self-service beverage bars

May 22, 2020

Self-serve fountain beverage machines at foodservice establishments could become a casualty of the coronavirus pandemic, according to a USA Today report.

The Food and Drug Administration has recommended restaurants limit self-serve food and beverage options such as drink stations, salad bars and beverage stations at the present time.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has recommended restaurants not operate self-serve beverage stations.

McDonald's has said beverage bars will be discontinued or operated by an attendant for the time being.

Restaurant Brands International, the parent company of Burger King, Tim Hortons and Popeyes, said its restaurants have deactivated self-serve beverage fountains in favor of offering beverages and condiments at the front counters.
