LAFAYETTE, IN -- Copper Moon Coffee said it has partnered with Club Coffee to introduce its coffees in the Canadian roaster's PurPod100 compostable beverage capsules.

Club Coffee said its PurPod100 pods will be compatible with most Keurig brewing systems that accept K-Cup portion packs, including the 2.0, and will be available to U.S. consumers in late 2015.

All parts of the portion pack are designed to be compostable, according to the companies. The PurPod100 is made from bio-based renewable resources, including "chaff," the skin of the coffee bean that comes off during the roasting process. It was reportedly developed in conjunction with international experts and scientists at Canada's University of Guelph (Ontario).

Copper Moon's organic Aztec Moon, Eco Harvest, Nueva Del Sol and Rainforest Reserve will be its first coffees available in the compostable capsules. The Lafayette, IN, roaster produces certified organic, fair-trade, and kosher coffees, which it sells to retailers, hotels, offices, grocers, convenience stores and foodservice distributors throughout North America.

The PurPod100 is being evaluated for compliance with U.S. and international standards required by municipal compost manufacturers, and is expected to be certified in the coming months.

Portland, OR-based Boyd's Coffee announced earlier this month that it will package its coffee in Club Coffee's compostable capsules. | SEE STORY
