A Murfreesboro, Tennessee company, Discarded Obsolete Machines and Technological Equipment Recovery, is taking action to address a growing security concern posed by abandoned Redbox DVD rental kiosks, according to a WGNS report.
With the recent bankruptcy of Redbox's parent company, thousands of kiosks have been left unattended, raising concerns about potential data breaches.
DOMATTER has filed an emergency court order to gain access to the kiosks and securely destroy any sensitive customer data, such as credit and debit card information. The company argues the unattended kiosks pose a significant risk of data theft and identity theft.
As the digital age continues to reshape the entertainment industry, the decline of physical media has led to the closure of many DVD rental businesses, including Redbox. This has left a legacy of abandoned technology, highlighting the importance of responsible data disposal and cybersecurity.
