Adults with type 2 diabetes can reduce the risk of cardiovascular disease and live longer by replacing sugary drinks with coffee or tea or water, according to a study published in the BMJ, MedicalNewsToday reported.
Researchers form the Harvard TH Chan School of Public Health studied more than 15,000 adults with type 2 diabetes for an average 18 years and found those consuming more sugar sweetened beverages had a 20% greater risk of death than those who consumed less of these beverages.
Those who consumed the most sugary beverages had a 25% greater risk of cardiovascular disease and a 39% greater risk of cardiovascular related death.
Those consuming up to six daily drinks of coffee, tea or water incurred a 26%, 21% and 23% lower risk, respectively, of death during the period, while those consuming high levels of low-fat milk had a 12% lower rate of mortality.
Higher consumption of coffee and low-fat milk was also linked to an 18% and 12% reduced risk of cardiovascular disease.
