Persons who consume large amounts of coffee have a lower risk for acute kidney injury, according to data published in Kidney International Reports.

Habitual coffee consumption is associated with the prevention of chronic and degenerative diseases including type 2 diabetes, liver disease and cardiovascular disease, according to a Healio report on the research.

Researchers evaluated 14,207 adults 45 and 64 years of age in the U.S. between 1987 and 1989.

Participants reported average coffee consumption of an 8-ounce cup of coffee with varying frequencies.

The researchers found greater coffee consumption correlated with lower AKI risk.

When accounting for other factors such as lifestyle, socioeconomic status, demographic characteristics and dietary factors, there was a 15% lower AKI risk for participants who consumed coffee compared to those who did not.
