Coca-Cola has issued a recall of select soft drinks in Belgium, Luxembourg and the Netherlands after elevated levels of chlorate, a chemical byproduct of water disinfection, were detected at a production plant in Belgium, according to a report by The Independent. Affected products include Coca-Cola, Fanta, Sprite, Minute Maid and Fuze Tea with production codes 328 GE to 338 GE.

The company is advising consumers not to drink affected products and to return them for a refund. An investigation is underway in the UK to determine if any contaminated products have been distributed there. The issue was identified during routine safety checks, and Coca-Cola reports no consumer complaints in Great Britain. While chlorate can pose health risks, especially to children, experts suggest that consumers would need to ingest large quantities to experience serious effects. Health authorities in Denmark, Portugal and Romania were also alerted to the potential contamination.
