Coca-Cola is considering increasing its use of plastic bottles in the United States due to tariffs imposed on imported steel and aluminum by the Trump administration, according to a report by The Guardian. The 25% tariffs could raise the cost of aluminum cans, prompting the beverage giant to shift its focus to plastic alternatives.

"For example, if aluminum cans become more expensive, we can put more emphasis on PET [plastic] bottles, etc.," James Quincey, Coca-Cola's chief executive, told the news outlet.

While Quincey acknowledged the potential impact of the tariffs, he also downplayed their significance, stating, "I think we're in danger of exaggerating the impact of the 25% increase in the aluminum price relative to the total system." He emphasized that packaging costs represent only a small fraction of the company's overall expenses.

The tariffs, initially imposed in 2018, have faced criticism from Canada, Mexico and the European Union, who fear a potential trade war. Although some exemptions were granted to beverage can makers in the past, the Trump administration has indicated that the current tariffs will be enforced without exceptions.
