TORONTO -- Club Coffee reports that its PurPod100 is the first single-cup coffee capsule to earn Biodegradable Products Institute certification.
Certification by BPI confirms that PurPod100 is "industrially compostable," meaning that it fully breaks down in large-scale commercial composting processes. Local governments across Canada are investing in composting processes to divert food and other organic waste to productive uses and away from landfills.
BPI certification requires that products be tested in approved independent laboratories and then independently verified according to technical standards ASTM D6400 and D6868.
Club Coffee developed PurPod100 in collaboration with the University of Guelph's Bioproducts Discovery and Development Centre.
"Diverting products associated with food residuals away from disposal is complicated, and BPI certification is a critical piece of the process, ensuring that items will break down in a timely manner in the appropriate composting environment, and not have a negative impact on the quality of the finished compost," said BPI executive director Rhodes Yepsen.
PurPod100 is compatible with most K-Cup brewing systems, including Keurig 2.0. Its BPI certification was earned partly because of the capsule's use of plant-based resins and its use of coffee "chaff," the coffee bean skin left over from the roasting process, in the cartridge's distinctive design.
Massimo Zanetti Beverage USA Inc., one of the country's largest roasters, said in April that it would introduce Club Coffee's PurPod100 to the U.S. market by the end of this year. Portland, OR-based Boyd's Coffee and Lafayette, IN-based Copper Moon Coffee have also announced their plans to package their brands in the biodegradable capsules. | READ MORE
