SYDNEY, Australia -- A skin cancer awareness campaign in Australia is using a custom crane machine to dispense sunblock to beachgoers at Sydney's popular Bondi Beach. As part of the Pretty Shady campaign sponsored by Cancer Institute NSW, which is hoping to increase awareness about the dangers of skin cancer, the entertainment vender dispenses sample bottles of SPF50+ sunscreen.
This is not the first time a charity or business has employed an attention-getting amusement vending machine as promotion vehicle. But what makes the Bondi Beach effort unique is that the modified machine is positioned as a wall on a bus shelter. By dramatically reducing the machine's standard depth, while increasing its height and width, the machine was able to replace a sidewall normally used for more traditional advertising.
The Pretty Shady campaign was developed by JCDecaux Australia, an outdoor advertising company.
