office coffee serviceMINNEAPOLIS -- Caribou Coffee has a new brew that can maintain an optimum drinking temperature of 160°F for an entire workday. Beans in the new Workday Roast contain natural inherent compounds that, when exposed to water, produce a slow exothermic reaction, allowing the coffee to self-heat for eight hours, according to the Minneapolis-based company.

Caribou estimates that the new roast will increase workplace productivity by 3%, saving the average employee 14 minutes each day by eliminating the need to discard cold coffee.

The company sourced the beans from Pilosa Flor, an island off the coast of Papua New Guinea. The coffee is described as "a full-bodied medium roast with notes of nutmeg and anise."

"Our friends in Papua New Guinea talked about the island of Pilosa Flor housing a unique terrain that is not ubiquitous in traditional coffee-yielding territories," said Caribou Coffee roastmaster Nate Hrobak. "Once the beans were harvested and brought back to our roastery, we noticed the beans contained drastically different compounds but were shocked that the coffee stayed hot for that long."

Workday Roast is now available in Caribou's 400 domestic coffeehouses. Distribution will extend to consumer packaged goods channels and Caribou's 200 international stores during the third quarter of 2015.
