TORONTO -- Canada's largest movie theater chain is launching a concept in the entertainment destination segment. Cineplex Entertainment's Rec Room will offer multiple attractions, including a full-size family center.
Each location will feature upscale casual dining and a bar, along with bowling, arcade games, billiards and ping pong, among other food and entertainment options. There are also plans for concerts and comics, among other live performances. The live venues will include theater-size, high-definition screens for sports viewing and other programming material.
The first Rec Room is set to open in Edmonton later this year in a 40,000-sq.ft. space adjacent to an existing Cineplex theater. Additional locations are scheduled to roll out over the next several years. The company has not announced plans to bring the Rec Room to the U.S.
"While variations of this concept have been rolled out on a wider scale in the U.S., our research shows a significant opportunity to develop and grow this business on a national scale in Canada," said Cineplex president and chief executive Ellis Jacob. "Cineplex is well positioned to leverage existing entertainment, gaming, foodservice, digital media and operational capabilities to bring this concept to life."
Cineplex says it serves more than 77 million guests in 160 theater locations annually.
