SMART CARD:LG Electronics' White Card is rumored to allow multiple credit and debit card choices on a single card via a small display.
SEOUL -- Just as smartphone payment systems are starting to take off, LG Electronics has leaked news of a "smart card." The new device resembles a standard credit or debit card, but also includes a variety of embedded functions common in smartphone payment systems.

Called the White Card, LG's device allows users to select the payment option they want to employ on a tiny liquid crystal display, and then use the card as they would a conventional debit or credit card. No special readers are required on the part of the merchant, and distribution of the card will be through established credit card issuers.

The card is rechargeable and is said to appeal to older shoppers who may not be comfortable using cellphones for payments or ATM cash withdrawals. LG is rumored to have ordered some 50,000 of the cards for limited release in South Korea.

According to industry pundits, the White Card will make its official debut at Mobile World Congress 2016 taking place Feb. 22-25 in Barcelona, Spain.
