MALIBU, CA -- The City Council in Malibu has voted to ban restaurants from giving out plastic straws, utensils and stirrers.

The city's 65 restaurants have until June 1 to comply. Instead of plastic utensils, straws and stirrers, Malibu businesses will have to provide alternatives made from paper, wood or bamboo.

The new restriction builds upon the city's effort to keep its beaches clean and be a leader in protecting the environment and ocean wildlife. Malibu banned plastic bags nearly 10 years ago.

Berkeley, CA, is among other coastal California cities considering similar regulations and many restaurants across the country have stopped providing straws in an effort to protect the environment.

Single-use plastic items have been under increased scrutiny across the globe, as they do not naturally degrade, clog storm drains and collect in the ocean. Scotland plans to ban plastic straws by 2019, and Taiwan has committed to eliminate plastic straws, cups and shopping bags by 2030.
