CHICAGO -- A vending machine of sorts incorporated into a bus shelter rewarded Chicagoans with free cans of Coke for sharing their smiles this summer.

Participants in the "Share a smile. Sip a Coke." campaign, created by New York City-based outdoor ad agency JCDecaux, faced the shelter's touchscreen in order to share a smile. It was registered by facial-recognition software, which signaled the machine to dispense a can of Coke.

Starting one hour before the event, the shelters displayed a countdown, building anticipation for the upcoming "happy hour" to receive a free can of Coke.

During non-dispensing hours, Chicagoans could use the touchscreens to select their favorite among three Coke products (Coke, Diet Coke, or Coke Zero) and input the name they wanted to appear on the label. The consumer could pose for selfies with their personalized bottles and then send "Share a Coke" emails to their loved ones.
