Boyd's Coffee, PurPod100PORTLAND, OR -- Boyd's Coffee has taken the wraps off what it claims is the world's first 100% compostable capsule, produced in partnership with Canadian coffee roaster Club Coffee. Called the PurPod100, the capsule is compatible with K-Cup brewing systems, including Keurig's new 2.0 model.

All parts of the portion pack are designed to be compostable, according to the companies. The PurPod100 is made from bio-based renewable resources, including chaff -- the skin of the coffee bean that comes off during the roasting process. It was reportedly developed in conjunction with international experts and scientists at Canada's University of Guelph.

The PurPod100 is undergoing a process to meet U.S. and international standards required by municipal compost manufacturers and is expected to be certified in the coming months. It is expected to be available by late 2015.

"Science shows that composting is an effective and conscientious solution to this growing environmental problem," said Club Coffee chief executive John Pigott. "Recycling isn't a convenient or well-developed solution because hot pods full of coffee grounds must be carefully separated and cleaned before collection. And biodegradation is too slow of a process, taking centuries to break down the billions of pods in landfills."
