According to an interview Wright gave to the BBC and other outlets, he decided to come forward because so many people were after him.

"I didn't take the decision lightly to make my identity public, and I want to be clear that I'm doing this because I care so passionately about my work, and also to dispel any negative myths and fears about bitcoin and the blockchain," Wright said in a press release. Additional proof was offered on Wright's blog by way of cryptographic keys and other technical information.

Since its introduction in 2009, bitcoin has stirred up much controversy. The stateless cryptocurrency has been linked to online drug trafficking and swindles involving currency speculation. Until now its creator had remained anonymous.

"I cannot allow the misinformation that has been spread to impact the future of bitcoin and the blockchain," Wright's statement read. "I'm now able to build on what I have previously completed by releasing my research and academic work and help people understand just how powerful this can really be."

The announcement comes as a host of major banks and other financial institutions are studying the bitcoin architecture, known as the "blockchain," for applications in the traditional financial markets.
